Traditional institutions in Ika South Local Government Area (headquarters at Agbor, Delta State) are very significant in maintaining culture, peace, and community development. They serve as custodians of customs and traditions, working hand in hand with the local government administration.
Here’s an overview of the traditional institutions in Ika South LGA:
1. The Dein of Agbor Kingdom
The paramount traditional ruler of Agbor Kingdom.
Title: Dein of Agbor.
Current occupant: HRM Dr. Benjamin Ikenchuku Keagborekuzi I.
The Dein is the custodian of Agbor customs and traditions, central to peace, culture, and unity across Ika South.
2. The Obi of Abavo Kingdom
The second major traditional stool in Ika South.
Title: Obi of Abavo.
- Current occupant: HRM King Uche Irenuma II.
The Obi oversees the Abavo clans and communities, with authority on cultural and communal affairs.
3. Council of Chiefs & Elders
Each Obi or King works with a Council of Chiefs (Inotu) and respected elders.
They support in decision-making, festivals, dispute resolution, and maintaining community values.
4. Cultural Custodians & Age Grades
Age-grade groups, masquerade societies, guilds, and women leaders (Omu) form part of the traditional structure.
They uphold cultural festivals such as the Iwa Igi Festival of Agbor, new yam festivals, and other rites of passage.
5. Ika South Traditional Rulers Council
All the recognized Obis and chiefs across Ika South are members of the Ika South Traditional Rulers Council.
The council works closely with the Executive Chairman of Ika South LGA to ensure peace, security, grassroots development, and cultural preservation.
